普通集裝箱，又稱干貨集裝箱（drycontainer）以裝運(yùn)件雜貨為主，通常用來裝運(yùn)文化用品、日用百貨、醫(yī)藥、紡織品、工藝品、化工制品、五金交電、電子機(jī)械、儀器及機(jī)器零件等。

冷凍集裝箱（reefercontainer）分外置和內(nèi)置式兩種。溫度可在-60℃~+30℃之間調(diào)整。內(nèi)置式集裝箱在運(yùn)輸過程中可隨意啟動(dòng)冷凍機(jī)，使集裝箱保持指定溫度；而外置式則必須依靠集裝箱專用車、船和專用堆場、車站上配備的冷凍機(jī)來制冷。這種箱子適合在夏天運(yùn)輸黃油、巧克力、冷凍魚肉、煉乳、人造奶油等物品。

開頂集裝箱,又稱敞頂集裝箱、開頂柜（opentopcontainer），這種集裝箱沒有箱頂，但有可折式頂梁支撐的帆布、塑料布或涂塑布制成的頂篷，可用起重機(jī)從箱頂上面裝卸貨物，開頂箱頂部可開啟或無固定項(xiàng)面的集裝箱，裝運(yùn)時(shí)用防水布覆蓋頂部，其水密要求和干貨箱一樣。適合于裝載玻璃板、鋼制品、機(jī)械等重貨。
